Babymoon. It’s not really a new terminology. Babymoon has been around for quite some time. But it’s only lately that the trend has percolated down to all and sundry. Once a privilege of the well heeled it is now a major trend across the world. Last year Prince William and Kate Middleton cocooned themselves at the Carribbean island of Mustique just after they announced that the next heir to England’s royal family was on the way. Their babymoon served as a booster to this trend in the East.
So what is babymoon? In simple terms, it’s the quality time spent by happy and glowing expecting couples. Yes, that’s when the soon-to-be father is over the moon and his other half is radiating inner happiness. It’s a second honeymoon no doubt but with great caution and much more care! Babymoon is an indication that the bond between the couple is growing from strength to strength. And the new addition will only cement their love!
Where to head for a babymoon
Like I just mentioned, expectant couples can’t be as reckless and wild as they were during their honeymoon. They have to take into account the health of both, the mother and the baby. A thoughtfully planned babymoon itinerary should comprise easy accessibility to the destination, low-intensity activities, availability of medical facilities and indulgence with a dash of sight-seeing thrown in.
** Go to a beach destination. It’s quiet and relaxing. If it’s an exotic destination, it may be just the perfect spot to release the tensions and knots from your urban regime. Walking is good for pregnant women say doctors. Imagine the fine sand kissing your feet while the two of you walk hand in hand. Won’t you walk an extra mile then? Good for the mama and baby no? There’s not much you can do on a beach. Good for you. Because nature trails and safaris are a bad idea at this time unless customised. Soak in the sun. Lie together on the beach. Swim together. Just be with each other.
**A spa resort is a great idea. It’s a great place to unwind. Such spas are generally located either on the outskirts of major cities or in enchanting surroundings. Perfect! Just right for you. Stroll around. Soak in the beauty of the place. Beautiful people against a beautiful backdrop! Indulge in couple massages. Several five-star hotels, luxury hotels, spas and spa resorts now have special packages for expecting mothers. In fact, India’s Ayurveda retreats now offer traditional ways of resolving complications during pregnancy. Pre-natal massages are pretty much on every spa’s catalogue now. Swollen feet, morning sickness, aching back and legs? Leave it to these guys!
** Road trips are a great option too. But make sure that the roads on your route and the wheels in your hand are in top condition. You definitely don’t want a bumpy ride at this time! Select a route that offers a fantastic natural setting with various shades. For example, you could drive through a national park, stop at a beach, spend some time with cascading waterfalls, spend the night at luxury villa and start off another day with a similar itinerary.
Where NOT to head for a babymoon
** This is plain common sense but just for the record don’t plan a trekking or hiking trip. A comfortable pregnancy is no reason to embark on a strenuous drill. Keep that for later. Walking is a good way to remain active and healthy during pregnancy but then you do know the difference between walking and hiking/trekking, don’t you?
Criteria to choose property for babymooning
The property must not be very far from the main city area. Isolated properties may not be the best choice for a babymooning couple. In case of emergency every minute matters. You don’t want to lose precious time.
The property should have a doctor on call. This is vital to administer first aid, give immediate medical attention and keep the situation under control till medical help is made available.
Precautions to keep in mind
If the pregnancy is complicated or is likely to develop into one at a certain stage, shun all thoughts of a babymoon immediately. This is in the best interest of the mother and child. Follow all the instructions of the doctor and keep all appointments with your gynaecologist. Just in case you really need a break from the regular routine and you want to revel in the mirth of your new-found happiness, travel to a nature park, spa resort or a beach on the outskirts of your city. Later, when the baby comes along, the three of you can enjoy a babymoon of a different kind!
Sight-seeing during a babymoon is not really a good idea. Firstly, it could get tiring. Do you really want to hop from one monument to another or walk endlessly in museums that stretch across miles? Secondly, babymooning is about cherishing the special moments and making new ones as your life undergoes a natural progression. Spend time with each other. Once you start juggling work, sleepless nights, vaccinations, playschool etc you’ll keep returning to these moments in your memories.
